Safety

Mandatory Safety Equipment

  • Helmet meeting ECE 22 or ECE 22.06 standard
  • Protective gloves made of leather or textile
  • Motorcycle jacket with protectors
  • Long pants (preferably motorcycle pants)
  • Closed shoes - boots or sneakers
  • Reflective vest (mandatory in case of accident)

Basic Traffic Rules

  • Keep lights on always, even during the day
  • Obey speed limits in all conditions
  • Maintain a safe 3-second following distance
  • Avoid blind spots of cars
  • Use turn signals for every direction change
  • Ride predictably - avoid sudden maneuvers
  • Watch for potholes, oil, and wet roads

Riding in Bad Conditions

  • Reduce speed by 30-40% in rain
  • Avoid metal surfaces and road markings
  • Increase distance to other vehicles
  • Use smooth throttle and brake inputs
  • Watch for hydroplaning at high speeds

Rules

Speed Limits

  • Urban areas: 50 km/h
  • Rural areas: 90 km/h
  • Expressways: 120 km/h
  • Highways: 130 km/h
  • New highways: 140 km/h (where marked)
  • Residential zones: 20 km/h
  • In rain: -20 km/h from allowed speed

Alcohol and Drugs

  • Allowed alcohol level: 0.05% (50 mg/100 ml blood)
  • For novice drivers (up to 2 years): 0.02%
  • Drugs: Strictly prohibited - zero tolerance
  • Medications: Check label for warnings
  • Penalties: Fine 500-1000 BGN + license suspension

  • Eco sticker (green sticker)

  • ECE 22 helmet (for driver and passenger)

Technical Inspections

  • Motorcycles over 125cc: Mandatory inspections
  • First inspection: After 4 years from first registration
  • Next inspections: Every 2 years
  • After 10 years: Annual inspections
  • Motorcycles up to 125cc: No mandatory inspection

Fines and Violations (2024)

  • Speeding: 20-300 BGN (depending on excess)
  • No helmet: 100 BGN
  • No lights during day: 50 BGN
  • Improper overtaking: 100-300 BGN
  • Riding in bus lane: 100 BGN
  • Parking on sidewalk: 50 BGN

Safe Riding Tips

Before Every Ride

  • Check tire pressure front and rear
  • Test front and rear brakes
  • Check all lights are working
  • Check engine oil level
  • Inspect chain - tension and lubrication
  • Check wheel spokes for cracks
  • Ensure mirrors are properly adjusted

Riding Technique

  • Braking: Use 70% front + 30% rear brake
  • Turns: Look through the turn, not into it
  • Position: Sit upright, knees pressed to tank
  • Arms: Slightly bent, not tense on handlebars
  • Counter-steering: Learn to turn by pushing handlebars
  • Throttle in turn: Steady throttle through turn for stability
  • Emergency braking: Brake straight, no turns

For Beginner Riders

  • Start with a lighter bike (under 250cc)
  • Take a professional riding course
  • Practice in empty parking lots first
  • Don't ride in heavy traffic initially
  • Learn to use both brakes effectively
  • Ride within your skill level

Highway Riding

  • Maintain 120-130 km/h (not slower than 90 km/h)
  • Ride in right lane, left is for overtaking
  • Increase following distance to 4-5 seconds
  • Watch for crosswinds from trucks
  • Stop every 150-200 km for rest
  • Watch for debris and objects on road

City Riding

  • Watch for opening doors of parked cars
  • Take the full lane - don't ride on edges
  • Anticipate pedestrian movements
  • Slow down at green traffic wave
  • Watch for tram tracks and manholes
  • Avoid lane splitting (filtering)

Motorcycle Maintenance

  • Oil: Change every 5000-10000 km
  • Chain: Clean and lubricate every 500 km
  • Tires: Check wear and pressure regularly
  • Brakes: Replace pads at 2-3 mm thickness
  • Filters: Air and oil filter according to schedule
  • Spark plugs: Replace every 10000-15000 km
  • Coolant: Replace every 2 years
